My son had something brush against his face while we were playing in the ocean. It was very painful burning sensation. The staff stated it was not a jellyfish but some kind of plant or coral that puffs up when you come into contact with it. Does anybody know what they are referring to?

Sounds like you got the old 'Penasco Two Step' from that staff (the runaround).
Jelly Fish (or their pieces) & baby sting rays are really about the only thing like that in the water your going to run into. The jellyfish you just have to watch out for (pour amonia on the sting to reduce the burning feeling). For stingrays get the kid an old pair of tennis shoes & wear them into the water. Shuffle your feet as you walk in the ocean & the changing water pressures scares away the baby sting rays.

Never heard of seaweed or a piece of rock coral suddenly 'puffing up' and stinging you!
Probably a piece of a jellyfish. Anyway, some people say apply urine or amonia, but we have always kept a bottle of plain old vinegar in our backpack & it works fine.
The real secret is to wear an old pair of sneakers in the water and just shuffle your feet when you walk around to protect against the baby stingrays. Far as the jellyfish go keep your eyes peeled for them.
