How is the fishing in December either surf or by boat? We are thinking of staying there over the holidays.

A lot depends on the water temperature. The warmer the temp, the more variety you're apt to get. In December it's mostly bottom fishing. There's always trigger fish and cabrilla. If you hire one of the pangas at the launch area, they will usually take you out a few miles where you can catch triggers and cabrilla. If you can get to some of the reefs with a charter or your own boat, you have a chance at grouper, various sea bass, red snapper or linguado (Cortez halibut which is really a kind of flounder). All are excellent table fare.
From the shore by the harbor mouth, you can usually get some triggers with calamari or actually any kind of meat. There are some places where there is a pretty good drop-off, rocks, or a shelf that are OK for surf fishing. There you're liable to catch almost anything or nothing at all. I've had mixed success surf fishing, but I still try it sometimes. Good luck, and enjoy yourself.
