Does anyone know if CB radios permanently installed (mike & transmitter not easily removed) require a permit in Mexico? We plan to cross at Lukeville in our M/H and travel to Peurto Penasco. The governemnt internet sites say registration (not available at the border crossings) is required although here in the States it is not.
Anyone know from recent personal experience?

Many thanks. Happy New Year!!

Unfortunately I can't share any personal experience with you re: CB's, but there's a Mexican consulate in Tucson that probably has a better answer:

See: http://www.tucsonaz.gov/infoguide/ig_listing.php?listing=197

MEXICAN CONSULATE
520 882-5595 Ext:
553 S. Stone Ave. Tucson, AZ 85701

If you do call, please let us know what they say, I'm curious how much (and how fast) the permits are ...

I imagine it's one of those silly things they could ding you on if they really really wanted to write you a ticket, but whether the ticket or the permit (or the propina ) would be more expensive I can't say Smile

I can say there's a lot of GMRS/FRS chatter in town - we usually take our little handheld family-size walkie talkies with us and pick up all sorts of traffic ...

I lost internet contact before your message posted. Many thanks for the reply.
As it turns out we are now back in Arizona after spending a delightful week at the Mayan Resort Peurto Penasco.
We were 8 couples in our M/H. I stopped at the border at Lukeville because I had no idea of the requirements. I got out with my vehicle title and showed it to an agent and he looked at me and said pass without even looking at the title. I then said we are 8 adults and we just bought liquor - no problem he replied!!
No-one ever asked anything else. I did not turn on my CB but the Mexican insureance agent also told me there really is no longer a permit required.
We took the M/H into P. Penasco one day, parked it and walked around, bought shrimp and had no problems.
Coming home US Customs stopped us, asked how many people, asked what we bought (liquor was the reply - he did not ask how much), waved a wand over one of our cargo bays and waved us on through.
A great trip and a very uneventful crossing both ways.
