The 4th Annual Charanga Derby will be held April 13, 2019. This competition is between various business and service clubs and has proved to be quite the event for entrants and spectators in Puerto Peñasco. The cars are made from everything from wheel borrows to wagons and barrels. The event benefits Casa Hogar home for the elderly. The entry fee is only $600.00 pesos and all proceeds do go to Casa Hogar.
The event takes place on the Mirador Hill Road (the road that goes to Manny’s Beach Club. If you want to sit in the bleachers, please plan to get there early and parking is at a premium. The derby which is free for everyone, will also feature a car show that starts at 2 p.m., live music, food and beverages. Feel free to bring your lawn chairs or plan to stand as everyone wants to stand on the line. The race track is lined with straw bales for the safety of the drivers and those watching. The race starts at 4 p.m.
Drivers must 15 years or older and the team must consist of 6 members. The 6 member team will push the car and driver up the hill and then push to start it downhill. There is ramp about 3/4 of the way down the hill and it is mandatory to go over the ramp or you will penalized 10 seconds. Last year some of those car reached pretty fast speeds. Drivers are required to wear helmets that meet DOT standards, long pants and enclosed shoes or any other safety equipment.
Prizes consist of trophies and gift certificates for the first 3 fastest cars. So if you haven’t registered your team, please do so soon. Come join in the fun and cheer your favorite team on and enjoy the Rocky Point hospitality.
