To watch, participate or for more info contact: JJ's Cantina Tlatelolco Massacre Remembrance Day - Ten days before the start of the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City at Tlatelolco Square thousands of high school students, mothers and children gathered to demonstrate for more freedom and democracy. Federal government officials declared the group 'communists' and regular army troops were given the order to fire upon the crowd. In the carnage that followed that afternoon over 400 children were killed by army troops using automatic weapons. The day is remembered as 'Red Tuesday' in many parts of Mexico as tribute to another difficult step taken on the road to democracy. 4th 'Day of St. Francis' - Papago indian tribes from Mexico & the U.S. meet in Sonoran towns like Puerto Peñasco for races, dances,ceremonies, great food & celebrations.White doves are released often in celebration of this day. 'National Mole Appreciation Days' - Mexico's national dish is recognized these days and shared with special friends & neighbors. Many 'taste tests' are held by family's & relatives. 7th 8th-10th 'Angler of the Year Contest' - The fishing contest continues in its final phase (Phase 3) as the Cholla Bay Sportsmans Association wraps up it's 1998 fishing derby contest. 8th-10th Sand Drags - Come watch all the bodies in bathing suits..Uh, we mean those fast sand rails as they race out on Sandy Beach in front of the old Reef Bar. Uh, race that is... 12th 'Festival of the Virgin of the Remedies' - On this day during the first Mexican Revolution, Spanish troops dressed a statue of the Virgin Mary in a uniform and gave it the title of the 'Queen of Wisdom of the Americas.' For further info contact CEDO. 29th-31st 'Great Tianguis Time' - Arts, crafts, costumes and food are purchased, bought, sold, traded and made that are used in the upcoming 'Noche del Muerto.' 31st ' Mexico's 1st Congress & Constitution Suspended' - Mexico's first ruler 'Emperor Iturbe' after the very first few months freedom from Spain, dissolved congress & the constitution in 1822, when some very vocal congressional leaders including Santa Ana refused to accept Democracy as the new country's form of government. Santa Ana & others openly supported rebellion against all forms of the idea of 'Democracy' & favored the 'Royal Monarchy' style of Europe as the pattern to set Mexico's rulers into.
